New Cover Button Assembly Dies for KAM Snaps Press Pliers

Cover buttons are a great way to add a decorative touch to your project. You can cover them with your choice of fabric for a perfect match every time.  Here we've combined our cover buttons with our glue pad disk bracelets to make a beautiful bracelet. (Click here for tutorial.)

Cover buttons are very easy to assemble with the manual assembly tool, included with each pack of cover buttons.  But if you're putting together more than a few, it can be tiring on your fingers.  Here's where our new cover button dies come in.

Our cover button dies are compatible with the KAMsnaps KX8J (or the older KX6A) professional handheld press.  They also work with the KAM DK93 table press with DK93-KX adapter base or the DK98 table press with DK98-KX adapter set. (Not compatible with the basic K1 or K2 pliers for plastic snaps.)

KAM Snaps Size 20 Extra Long Prongs vs Size 20 Regular Prongs

How can you tell the difference between size 20 regular vs size 20 extra long KAM plastic snaps when looking at them?

Since there is only a minuscule (0.6mm) difference in length, it's nearly impossible to measure with a ruler or even to visually see any difference. Instead, look at the side of the cap with the prong. Size 20 extra long caps will have a pinwheel pattern around the prong (as shown in the photo of the snap on the right). The regulars do not.

Size 20 (regular) snaps are the most commonly used size. They're often found on cloth diapers, cloth menstrual pads, and many household projects that don't use thin, stretchy or delicate fabric. The prong length on these are 5.6mm.

Size 20 extra long snaps are needed for thicker material, such as double layers of marine vinyl for key fobs. (If the material is too thick for the snap, the snap will just fall apart.) The prong length of size 20 extra long snaps is 6.2mm.

Tip: if your snaps are not closing properly, most likely the prongs are too long for that particular material. These videos explain why this happens. If you'd rather not buy shorter snaps, just cut the tips off the prongs prior to installation to shorten them.

101 Uses for KAM Snaps: Convert Velcro on Cloth Diapers to Snaps

Our KAM plastic snaps can be used in place of velcro as the closure on cloth diapers. In fact, KAM is a renowned name in the snap world and most commercial brands of diapers use KAM for their snaps.

If your diapers have velcro on them and the velcro is getting old and yucky, or your child has figured out how to undo it, you can convert the diaper to snaps using our table-top professional KAM snap press or our more affordable portable snap pliers for plastic snaps.

We have extensive step-by-step instructions in both written and video format to guide you through the process here. We even have a snap placement template you can print out and use. Thousands of mamas have converted their bumGenius, gDiaper, Thirsty Duo and other diapers to snaps and have even added snaps to their prefolds. You can also add a 2nd row of snaps if your diaper currently only has 1 row to increase the fit adjustment.

For lots more uses for your KAM snaps, visit our 101 Uses for KAM Snaps page. Want to share your snap project with us? We'd love to see it! You can email it to sales@kamsnaps.com or post it directly on our Facebook page.

More on Unpaper Towels (with Tutorial for a Matching Wet Bag)

Danielle of DIYDanielle.com writes:

" I think there's a lot of considerations with using unpaper towels in terms of being environmentally friendly... sort of like cloth diapers. You are using electricity and water to clean them, but they're reusable and you can often upcycle old items (ie. old towels or linens) for these. Paper towels use a lot of resources- all of the raw products used to make them, the oil/gas used in the process as well as in the transportation of the paper towels to the stores, the plastic bag they're transported in. The cardboard boxes they're transported in. Emissions from the factories and vehicles used in transport. Then you use them once and they're tossed. I've loved switching to these... LOVED it. I keep a few rolls of regular paper towels for dog accidents because I'm weird about that. I believe we've saved a lot of money not buying paper towels anymore AND they absorb more than a paper towel. They don't take up a lot of room in the washer/dryer so I don't feel like they contribute to laundry that much either."

Danielle shares her tutorial on making unpaper towels (with either snaps or velcro) here.  She also includes a tute on making a wet bag that you can hang in your kitchen to put the used unpaper towels in until the next wash.
