New Cover Button Assembly Dies for KAM Snaps Press Pliers

Cover buttons are a great way to add a decorative touch to your project. You can cover them with your choice of fabric for a perfect match every time.  Here we've combined our cover buttons with our glue pad disk bracelets to make a beautiful bracelet. (Click here for tutorial.)

Cover buttons are very easy to assemble with the manual assembly tool, included with each pack of cover buttons.  But if you're putting together more than a few, it can be tiring on your fingers.  Here's where our new cover button dies come in.

Our cover button dies are compatible with the KAMsnaps KX8J (or the older KX6A) professional handheld press.  They also work with the KAM DK93 table press with DK93-KX adapter base or the DK98 table press with DK98-KX adapter set. (Not compatible with the basic K1 or K2 pliers for plastic snaps.)

Install Plastic Snaps with KAM Snaps Table Press Without Changing Dies (No-Change Dies)

Introducing the No-Change Dies

If you have a professional KAM snaps table-top press, you probably love it. What you may not love so much is the need to change the top dies for the male side and then for the female side when installing plastic snaps.

You can now use our new no-change dies to install the entire snap without having to change parts. Works with size 20 plastic snaps and the DK93 table-press. (Size 16 no-change dies will be available at a later date.)

See how it works:

A few points of interest to note:
  • The 2-piece no-change dies are the exact ones that come with the KX multi-functional handheld pliers. These are our all-in-one pliers that are able to install both plastic and metal snaps (and are *not* the basic K1 or K2 pliers which can only install plastic snaps). So if you already have these the KX pliers, you already have the no-change dies. All you need to get the dies to work with the DK93 press is the single piece KX-to-DK93 adapter base. In fact, you can use ANY of the KX dies in the DK93 press as long as you have that adapter.
  • The original 3-piece dies that require changing are considered professional grade. They are the gold standard because each die is molded to perfectly fit each snap piece to maximize precision. While the no-change dies don't quite reach the same standards, they are a great time-saver for those who prefer that option.
  • If you're using these with a kick press, you may need to adjust the pressure to avoid breaking the bottom plastic die piece.
  • If you also own the original 3-piece dies that require changing, you can use the metal bottom piece from that set with the top piece from the no-change set.

Patented Wide-Base KAM Pacifier Clips in Black & Clear Now Available

Available for purchase at www.KAMsnaps.com.

These patented, lightweight yet sturdy plastic clips can be used to make ribbon pacifier holders. They have passed certification testing for lead and other harmful substances. These clips have a locking mechanism which makes it difficult for children to remove. See below for photo instructions.

These clips are very similar to our original pacifier clips, but have 2 primary differences. 1) The base is wider. 2) The ring through which the ribbon loops is more secure and less likely to be dislodged by prying hands.  Full comparison pictures shown below.

NOTE: While these clips do comply with regulations regarding harmful substances, please remember that they are comprised of parts small enough to pose a choking hazard and should always be used under adult supervision.

What Do Snap Sizes Mean & What Size Do I Need?

KAMsnaps.com currently offers snaps from size 14 all the way to size 24.  What do the sizes mean?

It is industry standard to refer to snaps by “size” or sometimes "line" or "ligne" according to their cap diameter. However, this “size” does not correspond to any actual measurements.  For example, size 20 snaps have a cap diameter of 12.4mm.  It is important never to confuse a snap’s “size” with its actual measurements.
**Note that sizes 14 and 16 plastic snaps have identical studs and sockets--only the caps are different.

To convert mm to inches, please refer to this chart: http://mdmetric.com/tech/cvtcht.htm.

14 9.74mm

16 10.7mm
4.2mm 5.2mm, 6.2mm, 7.2mm
20 12.4mm

24 14.8mm

What size snap should I use?
This is somewhat of a loaded question because what size is right for you depends on your particular project, the fabric you are using, the number of layers you have, and your own personal preference.
Note that there is some flexibility in which size can be used.  For example,  if you have 4 layers of t-shirt cotton, most likely size 16 and size 20 snaps would both work.

The information below is just a general guide and may not necessarily apply to every single case:
- Size 20 is most commonly used for general applications, including baby diapers, clothing, and household projects.   This is the most popular size of plastic snaps and is a good size to start with for most projects.

- Size 16 is most commonly used for baby and toddler clothing, mama pads, and multiple layers of grosgrain ribbon.  Because size 16 caps have shorter prongs compared to size 20 caps, they are more appropriate for thinner material. For example, 2-3 layers of t-shirt cotton would probably work better with the shorter size 16 caps than size 20 caps.  Also, since size 16 sockets and studs are smaller compared to size 20 sockets and studs, they have a slightly less firm (though still firm) grip, which makes them more appropriate for delicate fabric more easily prone to tearing as a result of repeated snapping & unsnapping over time, such as stretch cotton.

- Size 14 has very short prongs and should only be used for very thin material like a single layer of grosgrain ribbon or doll clothing.  Generally, size 14 caps are so short that they're best for a single layer of thin material.  Please note however that your material may be more proned to ripping over time if you are only using a single layer.  Size 14 long prong caps would be more appropriate for multiple layers.  Size 14 sockets and studs are identical to size 16 sockets and studs.

- Sizes 24 and 22 are for heavy duty applications requiring a firmer grip, such as tote bags, tarps, coats, and upholstery. Size 24 provides the firmest grip.

Generally speaking, the smaller the “size”, the shorter the prong and the thinner the fabric they should be used for.  However, we also offer long-prong options for thicker projects.

To make it even more interesting, you can also mix sizes.  For example, you can use size 16 caps with size 20 sockets & studs.  This is what I personally do with most of my projects because my material layers tend to be thin which work better with size 16 caps, but I prefer the stronger grip and larger size of the size 20 sockets & studs.

This can all be overwhelming to the new user not familiar with snaps or how they exactly work.  Good sizes to start with for most applications are size 20 and size 16. You can play around with each size as well as mix & match them to see what best suit your needs and preferences.

If you are unsure which size you need, you may also purchase snap samples here.

Snaps for Grovia Diapers

Most diapers use size 20 plastic/polyresin snaps.  Grovia diapers are one of the exceptions we have found. As of our testing in August 2012 of their AIO, the diapers use size 20 caps with size 22 sockets and studs.  Our size 22 KAM sockets and studs and size 20 caps are compatible with the snaps on Grovia diapers, so if you have a snap you need to repair, you can do so easily with your table-top professional snap press or your portable handheld pliers.

Please note, the above only applies to the snaps found on the actual shell--not on the inserts. The inserts use a different brand of snaps that are not compatible with any of our current KAM snaps.

101 Uses for KAM Snaps: Convert Velcro on Cloth Diapers to Snaps

Our KAM plastic snaps can be used in place of velcro as the closure on cloth diapers. In fact, KAM is a renowned name in the snap world and most commercial brands of diapers use KAM for their snaps.

If your diapers have velcro on them and the velcro is getting old and yucky, or your child has figured out how to undo it, you can convert the diaper to snaps using our table-top professional KAM snap press or our more affordable portable snap pliers for plastic snaps.

We have extensive step-by-step instructions in both written and video format to guide you through the process here. We even have a snap placement template you can print out and use. Thousands of mamas have converted their bumGenius, gDiaper, Thirsty Duo and other diapers to snaps and have even added snaps to their prefolds. You can also add a 2nd row of snaps if your diaper currently only has 1 row to increase the fit adjustment.

For lots more uses for your KAM snaps, visit our 101 Uses for KAM Snaps page. Want to share your snap project with us? We'd love to see it! You can email it to sales@kamsnaps.com or post it directly on our Facebook page.

Heart KAM Plastic Snaps - New Colors

We have new colors of heart-shaped plastic snaps, available by the single color or mixed at http://www.kamsnaps.com/Plastic-Snaps/Heart-Star-Snaps/Heart-Snaps-p118.html.

Heart caps are generally used with size 20 sockets and studs but can also be used with size 16/14 sockets/studs and even size 22.

Heart caps are the same size as sz20 round caps, so the same die can be used for both snap pliers and snap presses.
