Size 16 snaps are smaller than size 20 and are more commonly used for thinner material such as baby/toddler clothing and pacifier clip holder ribbons.  Size 16 caps can be mixed with size 20 sockets/studs, which is what I do most often.  My material tends to be on the thin side, like 2 layers of cotton, so the shorter prongs on the size 16 caps are more appropriate. However, I prefer the firmer grip and larger size of the size 20 sockets/studs. If you've never used size 16 snaps before, September would be a time to try them out!
